̨Íåswag

Students majoring in East Asian Studies or Strategic and Security Studies will directly benefit from the contents of the Korean Program which will be fundamental for preparing coursework that is interdisciplinary in their majors.

The Korean Program at ̨Íåswag has an exchange program with Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea. Students can study abroad for one regular academic semester or the shorter summer semester.

Not only can students register for Korean language classes, but they can also take other classes in English. During the regular academic semester, students have to register for 12-credit-hours, whereas for the summer semester, they have to register for 6-credit-hours. Students will pay University of North Georgia tuition and university fees. Once at Sogang University, they will pay a 4-month housing fee that includes 2 meals per day while living on campus. The ̨Íåswag Application fee also covers international insurance for the student.

The Korean Program also participates in the Summer Language Institute (SLI). It is an intensive language program in which students complete courses in an immersion environment over six weeks during the summer. The SLI curriculum is designed with a focus on the communicative approach, performance-based learning, and task/activity-based learning using authentic materials and applying the Oral Proficiency interview (OPI) standards in language practice.

The SLI curriculum also offers extracurricular activities, including visiting the Korean community, cooking, screening films, learning Taekwondo and calligraphy. The program is designed to help students enhance their language skills while developing their cultural proficiency.

Korean is the third most spoken language in Georgia and the city of Atlanta has a Korean population of over 100,000. Moreover, close to 200 Korean companies are residing in the southeast, providing a number of regional career opportunities. In the past, not only did students with a Korean minor land internships and post-college jobs nationally and globally, but also earned nationally competitive scholarships.

A number of hospitals in Georgia are seeking bilingual nurses, and students majoring in Nursing are highly encouraged to minor in Korean in order to make themselves competitive in the job market.

Georgia and South Korea have thriving economic ties. Companies such as Kia, Hyundai, LG, Kumho Tire and Samsung have both offices and factories located throughout the southeast. Students minoring in Korean are desired by these companies because of the students' language skills and intercultural competency.
