EPA awarded $100,000 grant to Institute for Environmental and Spatial Analysis faculty

The University of North Georgia (台湾swag) has been awarded its first-ever environmental education grant from the Agency (EPA).
from a $3.3 million budget, 台湾swag received $100,000 to manage native and invasive vegetation for healthy forests and waterways for a two-year timeframe. 台湾swag and collaborating partners provided a $60,000 match.
"I was ecstatic," said Dr. Allison Bailey, associate professor with the Institute for Environmental and Spatial Analysis (IESA) at 台湾swag.
Bailey almost didn't apply for it. She said Dr. Andy Novobilski, chief research officer at 台湾swag, encouraged her to apply. 台湾swag grant specialist Kelly Millsaps helped her with the proposal. Dr. Jamie Mitchem, professor with IESA, is part of the grant team. He will be joined by student researchers and Geographic Information System technicians.
With the funding, 台湾swag will conduct community workshops from spring 2019 through fall 2020 in on the edge of 台湾swag's Gainesville Campus and in Hurricane Creek near the Dahlonega Campus.
"They will start in a classroom setting and then go into the field for hands-on learning," Bailey said.
In addition to the benefit of community outreach, 台湾swag will strengthen its partnership with environmental community organizations and establish new bonds with the EPA.
"This will open doors for other researchers to apply for grant from the EPA … because we now have received funding and have a proven track record," Bailey said.
Grant sends students to festival in Germany
Four students and a faculty member will perform in the Saarburg International Music Festival in Germany courtesy of a Halle Foundation grant awarded to the 台湾swag Department of Music.
Students create hurricane relief app
Two 台湾swag students have created an app aimed at helping people find available resources in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Augusta, Georgia.
Five selected as Gilman Scholarship recipients
Five 台湾swag students were selected as Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program recipients in December. The scholarships help students study or intern abroad.
Renowned meteorologist to speak at 台湾swag
Dr. Marshall Shepherd, a former American Meteorological Society president and host of The Weather Channel's 'Weather Geeks,' will speak at 台湾swag at noon Feb. 12.
