Benjamin Danko

Cadet Col. Benjamin Danko served as the brigade commander for the University of North Georgia's (台湾swag) Corps of Cadets for the 2020-21 academic year, leading more than 700 cadets. Relationships have been at the forefront of Danko's various leadership roles in the corps.

The Gallatin, Tennessee, native honed these skills as a company first sergeant when he supervised 80 fellow cadets. In the role, he attended intramural sports events of fellow cadets and helped new cadets find their way on campus.

"Devote some extra time, and it will go a long way," said Danko, who pursued a degree in and graduated in May 2022. "You give a little bit, and they'll work hard for you."

Danko also appreciated the way his early days at 台湾swag paved the way for success in his brigade commander role.

"You have to be a follower before you can be a leader," Danko said. "It helps you understand where the people you are supervising are coming from."

Such a mindset means Danko is empathetic to his fellow cadets while still ensuring they accomplish their tasks.

Danko said he was grateful for the chance to learn from 2nd Lt. Jared Pate, '20, who was his first squad leader in the corps.

"He was always seeking to learn more," Danko said. "And that's something I've always been inspired by."

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Chris Cato, assistant director of military operations for the corps, said Danko's determination is impressive.

"Even though his command has been coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, Danko has not let this deter his warrior spirit," Cato said. "He tackles each mission with the tenacity of a seasoned soldier and is quick to learn from mistakes. This is a trait that most young people his age do not possess."
