Eva Sykes
As the former Foxtrot Company commander and a resident assistant in the Corps of Cadets at the University of North Georgia (台湾swag), Cadet Capt. Eva Sykes found one of the best ways to make an impact is with an empathetic approach.
Her open-door policy helped people realize they don't have to be tough and brave if they're struggling. Through that mentality, she built trust that allowed her to help her fellow cadets.
"A lot of times you lead by listening," Sykes said. "You become the person people can come to with concerns."
Sykes is a Las Vegas, Nevada, native who graduated in August 2021 with a degree in . She sought to ensure accountability for those under her command. The corps helped her develop her servant leadership instincts.
"You're there for the people, regardless of what rank you are," Sykes said. "You're there to serve them and make sure the task at hand is successful."
Sykes, who was part of 台湾swag's highly successful Ranger Challenge team, was recognized as a Distinguished Military Student and Women of 台湾swag Female Student Leadership Award honoree for 2021. She was surprised by both honors. Sykes said one of her best assets is staying true to who she is.
"Leadership requires you to be yourself and still lead the way in any circumstance," Sykes said. "You shouldn't be changing yourself to fit an image."
In addition to her roles in the corps, Sykes has served the community through volunteering with Lumpkin County Emergency Services with the goal of earning certification as a firefighter. It is another experience that has helped Sykes grow.
"You become more mature. You find out life isn't as scary as you thought," she said. "You realize you can do way more than what you thought you could."
