You've Been Accepted, Now What?

Congratulations on your graduate student acceptance to the University of North Georgia! As an accepted graduate student, you are likely to have many questions. This guide will help you get started.

Please read through this guide carefully and explore the links that provide additional information to prepare you for the start of classes.

1. Immediate Steps After Acceptance

1.1 Activate Your ̨��swag Account
You will use the same username and password to log in to a number of important university systems. Use the link to find your username and enroll in the password management system.

Once you have activated your ̨��swag account, for your security, all ̨��swag contact and correspondence will be sent to your ̨��swag email account. Please also use your ̨��swag email account when contacting ̨��swag faculty and staff. It is important to be checking this email consistently on a weekly or daily basis.

Please note: After a student is admitted, it may take up to 48 hours before the student's information is available to activate. If you are not able to activate your ̨��swag account after 48 hours, contact the IT Service Desk at 706-864-1922 for assistance with activation.

Once complete, then you will be able to access and explore:

1.2 Confirm Your Acceptance

To guarantee your status as a graduate student at ̨��swag, submit your confirmation of acceptance.  Log into this page using your ̨��swag ID number or Social Security Number, and your date of birth. Beneath your admissions decision, select “Confirmation of Acceptance”. Complete the form as appropriate. 

You will not have to pay a “confirmation” fee. You will only need to submit the form via your check application status page.

1.3 Complete your Orientation Modules 

Graduate students are encouraged to complete the prior to starting classes. These modules cover a variety of topics including ̨��swag Technology, Academic Information, Paying for College, Libraries and Research, and more vital onboarding information.

There is no charge for the online orientation.

1.4 Apply for Financial Aid
As a graduate degree seeking student, you may be eligible for some forms of financial aid. You may apply for federal financial aid at the F and J non-immigrant students are not eligible to apply for federal financial aid. ̨��swag offers a convenient payment plan through a third-party company to arrange monthly payments. If interested, students can enroll in the payment plan in Banner after class registration.

For financial aid questions, please visit ̨��swag Financial Aid or call 706-864-1412. For more specific questions, you should contact your financial aid counselor.

After submitting your financial aid application, you should be very pro-active in monitoring your eligibility and award status via your BannerWeb account.

Note: Students classified as non-degree or provisional admit types are not eligible for Federal Student Aid.

Special notes for graduate admits currently enrolled at another institution:

If you have already submitted your FAFSA for the academic year you will be attending ̨��swag, you will need to go to to make a correction to your FAFSA by adding ̨��swag's school code: 001585

Loans at your prior school must be canceled before you can request any remaining loan funds from ̨��swag.

All final transcripts from prior schools must be submitted to ̨��swag before your financial aid eligibility is determined.

The Financial Aid Timeline is a helpful tool for all students.

Important Note: Although you can apply for most forms of aid at any time during the academic year, it is best to submit your application and all required supporting documents before the priority deadlines to ensure your aid can be processed and awarded prior to the start of term.

1.5 Submit Official Documents

Final official transcripts reflecting degrees awarded should be submitted as soon as possible before the start of the intended semester of enrollment. If this is not possible, you will have a hold placed on your student record and will not be allowed to proceed in the program beyond the first semester until an official transcript with the degree conferred is received by Graduate ̨��swag. 

If you were admitted based on an unofficial score report, official scores directly from the testing agency must be submitted and received.

2. Prior to Registration

2.1 Review Payment Deadlines and Monthly Payment Guides 

Please visit Payment Deadlines & Information for approximate information on when to pay fees.  

Paying for tuition and fees overtime is an option using Nelnet. Once you have registered for classes and been awarded your financial aid packet, if applicable, you can sign-up for the payment plan. 

If you have been classified as an out-of-state resident for tuition classification purposes but believe this designation is incorrect, please review the residency policy and complete the Application for In-State Tuition.

Graduate students who are enrolled in a fully online program do not pay a tuition differential when classified as out-of-state.

2.2 Request Transfer Credit (if applicable)  
A must be submitted to your advisor/program coordinator to be considered for transfer credit. Once approved and signed, the form should be sent to the Registrar’s Office at transfer@ung.edu. The Registrar’s Office will place the approved credit on your account in Banner/DegreeWorks. 
 
To view any approved transfer credits, follow these steps.

Select the "Student" tab 

Select "Student Records" 

Select "Student Tranguid" and ensure that all credit has been articulated. If you do not see a course on your transcript that you believe should be there, there may be a few reasons: 

In-progress courses – credit for courses you are currently enrolled in, have completed while in the admissions process, or completed since the last time you submitted a transcript from your previous institution will not be applied until an official transcript indicating grades is received. 

Credit already applied toward another degree cannot be accepted.

Any transcripts that have not been sent to ̨��swag should be sent as soon as possible (with final grades or scores indicated) to ensure application of appropriate credit to your record.

2.3 Check Your Accounts for Holds
Log in to

Select the "Student" tab

Select "Student Records"

Select "View Holds"

Registration Agreement Needed (RN) Hold: This hold prohibits registration. It is required every six months.

To remove the hold:

Log in to

Select the "Student" tab

Select "Student Records"

Select "Manage Registration Agreement"

Read the terms of the agreement, and select "I Agree" at the bottom.

Once "I Agree" is clicked, the hold will be instantly removed.

Please reference the Student Holds website for an explanation of other holds and how to remove them.

2.4 Set Up Your Accessibility Accommodations (If Applicable)

If you previously had an IEP, 504 plan, or other documentation that would reflect the need for accommodations, please contact the Office of Student Accessibility Services to discuss your specific needs and the process to receive accommodations at ̨��swag.

Please be advised that the intake process takes time, so it’s important to schedule an appointment before the start of term to ensure your accommodations are in place when classes begin. Students must actively request accommodations, even when they transfer from another college, through the Student Accessibility Services office in order to receive them.

Once registered, you will need to notify your professor(s) in order to receive special accommodations.

3. Prior to Start of Classes

3.1 Review Your Registration Information and Register for Classes 
Many of our graduate students are required to register themselves for their coursework. Communicate with your academic advisor to determine what classes you need to take and if you are required to self-register.

Review registration information and register for classes in .  

Once you have chosen your classes, you should confirm your choices with your academic advisor and then register. If you have no holds, you can register prior to your academic advising appointment and then use the add/drop system to make any necessary schedule changes after meeting with your advisor.

Run Degree Works again after you register. All of the classes you have registered for will show up as "IP." Make sure your courses are all there and that they fill a degree requirement.

3.2 Review Your Invoice, Pay Tuition and Fee Bill, and Sign Up for Payment Plan

Please visit the Payment Deadlines & Information webpage for approximate information on when to pay fees. We do encourage you to go ahead and set up a payment plan after you are registered for classes, but prior to orientation if needed.

3.3 Submit Your Immunization Form 

All new students who are attending regularly scheduled classes (including distance learners) or are receiving resident credit are required to submit a Certificate of Immunization (PDF) to Student Health Services. 3.4 Order Textbooks

Find textbooks for your courses at the ̨��swag Bookstore.

3.5 Review the Academic Calendar

Review the ̨��swag Academic Calendar paying close attention to class start/end dates, add/drop & withdrawal dates.

3.6 Review my̨��swag 

is the ̨��swag student portal with valuable information for students, links to other resources, and a way to learn about events and student life.

3.7 Sign Up for ̨��swag Alert

̨��swag Alert is the emergency notification system used to notify the community of crimes and emergencies that occur on or near ̨��swag campuses.

3.8 Review D2L Tutorial

The e introduces you to ̨��swag's learning management system, eLearning@ung (D2L). Students will learn how to navigate their courses and use the various tools available within the course. The tutorial is available for self-enrollment within the . You can also review eLearning@̨��swag (D2L) frequently asked questions.

4. On Campus and/or Program Specific Resources

4.1 Secure Housing (on campus programs only)

Graduate students can use the resources of the to learn more about rental and roommate options near our campuses.

4.2 Submit a Photo for Your ̨��swag ID card (on campus programs only)

Visit the ̨��swag ID Card Photo Submission page to see photo guidelines and the photo submission portal. Students required to attend orientation must upload a photo at least three business days prior to your orientation session.

Note: Online Photo Submission for new terms will not be available until the below dates.

4.3 Order your virtual parking permit (on campus programs only)

All vehicles on campus are required to register for a valid ̨��swag parking permit. Parking permits will be available for registration for summer and fall starts on August 15. Students beginning classes in the summer semester do not need to register for a parking permit until August 15. Learn more about registering your vehicle.

4.4 Learn more about the Anthology Portfolio (Teacher Education (MAT); Curriculum & Instruction (M.Ed.); Early Childhood Education (M.Ed.); Educational Leadership Certification, Tier 1; Education Leadership, Tier 2 (Ed.S.); Educational Leadership Certificate Add-On, Tier 2; and Endorsement programs only)

This is a web-based software in the College of Education that is designed to capture, assess, and showcase student growth over your entire learning journey.

4.5 Mandated Reporter Training - Teacher Education (MAT)

Visit and complete the free mandated reporting training offered through ProSolutions.

You will need to create an account in order to access and complete the training. The certificate completion date should match the year you are enrolled.
